What Is Stump Grinding?

(770) 766-7584How does a stump grinder work?
A steel wheel studded with carbide teeth spins at high speed while the operator sweeps it side to side across the stump. Each pass takes off a layer. The operator lowers the wheel, sweeps again, and repeats until the stump is below grade, then follows the surface roots outward. Machines range from walk-behinds that fit through a garden gate up to tracked units for large hardwood stumps.
Why grind instead of digging a stump out?
Digging means an excavator, a crater, torn-up turf, and a stump to haul off and dispose of. Grinding stays inside a tight footprint, produces mulch instead of waste, finishes in hours rather than a day, and costs a fraction as much. That is why grinding is the default and removal is the exception.
What does it look like when the job is done?
A raked-flat patch of chip and soil where the stump was, no visible wood above grade, and surface roots knocked below mowing height. In North Georgia clay the spot typically settles over a few months, so plan to top it off with soil once before you seed for good.

More on how stump grinding works
Is stump grinding the same as stump removal?
No. Grinding shaves the stump into chips down past ground level and leaves the deeper root mass to rot naturally. Removal goes after the root ball so the space can take a new tree or a structure. Grinding is faster, cheaper, and gentler on the lawn; removal is what you need when something is going back in that exact spot.
What is left behind after grinding?
A shallow depression filled with a mound of wood shavings mixed with soil. Most homeowners have it raked back in, since the pile settles as it breaks down. If you want to seed or sod right away, clean topsoil over the top works better than chips, and we can haul the grindings off instead.
Will the stump grow back?
The stump itself will not, but some species send up suckers from surviving root sections — sweetgum and poplar are the usual offenders in North Georgia. Grinding low and taking the root collar out removes most of that risk. Any shoots that do appear can be mowed or spot-treated and will run out of stored energy.
