(770) 766-7584The problem with surface roots
Grinding the stump alone often leaves a spider of roots radiating ten or fifteen feet across the lawn. In shallow clay soil those roots sit right at mowing height. They scalp, they trip, they keep grass from filling in, and around old pines they stay solid long after the stump is gone.
How root grinding works
We follow each major root out from the stump and grind it below grade in sections, tapering as the root thins. Turf either side is left as intact as the run allows, and the trench line gets raked flat so you can topdress and seed.
What is included
- Walk of the root runs with you before pricing
- Check for irrigation, lighting wire and shallow utilities in the path
- Roots ground below grade so the lawn mows clean
- Sections tapered out where roots thin rather than stopped abruptly
- Trench lines raked level and backfilled
- Honest call on roots that should stay for a living tree's stability
What affects price and timing
Total linear footage of root, how deep each run sits, soil condition, and how much obstruction sits along the path. Roots weaving through a flower bed or along a fence take longer per foot than roots in open lawn.
Root grinding questions
Can surface roots be ground without killing the tree?
Sometimes, and sometimes not. Grinding roots close to a living trunk removes anchorage and feeder capacity, and an over-cut tree can decline or become a wind risk. Distance from the trunk and the share of the root plate involved decide it. If the tree is staying, we grind conservatively and tell you honestly when a root should be left alone.
Why do roots keep surfacing in my yard?
North Georgia red clay is dense and drains slowly, so roots run shallow and sideways where the oxygen is instead of driving deep. Add erosion on a sloped lot and mowing that scalps high spots, and roots that were always near the surface get exposed. Grinding them back plus a topdressing of soil is the practical fix.
Do you grind roots under walkways and driveways?
We grind roots in open ground and along edges. Roots that have already lifted concrete usually need that section cut or removed to reach them, which is concrete work rather than grinding. We will look at the spot, grind what can be reached safely, and tell you plainly where the limit is instead of guessing.
