Stump diameter at the widest point
Measure across the stump at ground level, including the flare where it swells out — not the trunk you remember. Grinding volume climbs quickly with width, so an 30-inch stump is far more than twice the work of a 15-inch one.
Root spread
How far the surface roots run, and whether you want them ground too. A stump with fifteen feet of exposed root in three directions is really several small jobs attached to one stump.
Wood type — pine vs oak and hardwood
Around Gainesville most jobs are loblolly pine, white and red oak, sweetgum, hickory or poplar. Pine and poplar cut fast. Oak and hickory are dense, slow, and hard on carbide teeth.
North Georgia soil conditions
Red clay with embedded grit dulls teeth and slows the pass. Soil washed up over the root collar means grinding dirt before wood, which nobody enjoys but somebody has to price.
Access and slope
Gate width, side-yard clearance, retaining walls, septic fields, and hillside lots decide which machine can reach the stump — and sometimes decide whether a smaller, slower machine is the only option.
Depth and finish you want
A normal lawn grind is shallower than a grind for replanting or a footing. Hauling grindings off instead of backfilling with them adds disposal and a trip.
How to get an accurate quote fast
Measure across each stump at ground level, count them, note the tree type if you know it, and measure your narrowest gate. Send that with a photo or read it to us on the phone and you will get a real number, not a range.
Cost questions from Hall County homeowners
Why won't you quote a price over the internet?
Because a number posted on a page is a guess about a stump nobody has seen. Two stumps of the same diameter can differ by hours once you account for hardwood density, a hidden root flare, or a machine that has to be walked around a house. We quote free by phone with a few measurements, from photos, or in person — and the quote holds.
Is it cheaper to grind several stumps at once?
Almost always, per stump. A large share of any job is travel, unloading, and setup. Once the machine is in your yard, the next stump only costs grinding time. If you have a cluster from a recent tree removal or storm cleanup, get them all quoted together instead of calling back in a few months.
Does pine cost less to grind than oak?
Generally yes. Pine is softer and grinds faster, while mature oak, hickory and sweetgum are dense and wear teeth harder. Pine stumps do have wide, shallow root plates that add root work, so a big pine is not automatically the cheap job. Wood type is one input into the quote, not the whole story.
Does the red clay in Hall County change the price?
It can. Grinding teeth hate grit, and North Georgia clay packs hard around the root flare with sand and small stone in it. That slows the cut and wears teeth faster than loose loam. Stumps on eroded slopes where clay has washed in over the root collar are the usual culprits, and we account for it up front.
